Online information workshops begin

18th July 2022
Free online information workshops open to kinship carers across England.

Kinship’s Peer Support Service has lots of elements to help support your journey as a kinship carer. We’ve heard that you want more emotional support through peer support. This is where new kinship groups for peer support will be stepping-in to add to the existing 140 groups.

But you also told us you need practical information to help cut through the red-tape and uncertainty of kinship care. So, we’re creating free online workshops on a range of topics that you’ve told us you need. These workshops are only for you as kinship carers, to meet your needs, and are accessible to everyone in England.

In May, we ran an online poll to find out what workshop subjects we should cover. They included:

But carers also shared the need for the most basic information about kinship care. Many have been left alone with no help at all.

Since May, the team have been busy building and testing the first workshops. Some brilliant kinship carers shared their feedback to make sure we include the right information, in a way which is easy to understand.

Now, we’re delighted to have two new workshops live for kinship carers:

Our first workshop, ‘An introduction to kinship care’ went live to our Kinship Community, and it filled up in under an hour!

We expect our second workshop, What financial help am I entitled to as a kinship carer? to be popular too.

I joined the zoom introduction yesterday and it was so encouraging. Thank you, it has helped me to realise that other kinship carers are out there and going through the same battles. Some sterling examples of those who have come through and are now helping others.

We’re limiting numbers to 10-12 carers per session. We’ve heard how important it is to be together in a small group. There is the chance to ask questions and share experiences in the group, if you feel comfortable to.

We’ve tested sending text messages to those coming to the workshops, to offer a handy reminder. Also, we’ve made handouts which we will send out after the workshop, so you have something you can refer to when you need it.

Each workshop will be running on a regular basis and at different dates and times, to offer the best chance for you to attend. If you cannot make one listed, don’t worry, other dates will be coming so keep an eye on the website.

We are creating another four workshops over the summer holidays. Once we’ve tested them with kinship carers, we’ll share more details.
